Ikhlas, or sincerity, is the cornerstone of self-betterment and the path to success. This journey begins with Ikhlas, rooted in the first part of our testimony of faith, the Shahada, La ilaha illallah (لا إله إلا الله) There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah
This declaration signifies that Allah alone deserves our worship, and no one else is worthy of such devotion or obedience. It represents a complete surrender to Allah's sovereignty, acknowledging that every aspect of life should be dedicated to pleasing Him alone.
Central to this philosophy is the profound belief in Allah's supremacy, which involves relinquishing ownership of one's life entirely to Him. This commitment extends beyond mere words to a deep internalization, where every aspect of life—mind, body, and soul—is dedicated solely to pleasing Allah. This devotion is likened to an endowment, وَقْف waqf where the benefits derived from one's life are directed towards causes beloved to Allah, reinforcing the concept of total dedication and selflessness in pursuit of spiritual fulfilment.
Ikhlas entails reaching a level where Allah alone holds ownership over every aspect of one's life. This profound commitment means that every action is for the sake of Allah. It extends beyond traditional worship practices to encompass all facets of life, including marriage, business dealings, fitness routines, and even daily activities like meals and sleep.
The essence of worship in Islam is comprehensive and all-encompassing, guided by the fundamental principle that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah. The Quran states:
وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me [Adh-Dhariyat 51:56]
Understanding the correct translation of this verse is crucial. Many translate it as “We created mankind and jinn-kind to worship Allah.” However, the accurate translation is “We did not create mankind and jinn-kind except to worship Allah.” This distinction emphasises the broader scope of worship in Islam as a holistic way of life rather than just ritualistic acts.
Allah grants believers the opportunity to elevate their everyday actions by aligning them with sincere devotion (Ikhlas). Worshipping Allah isn't confined to specific acts like salah (prayer), zakah (charity), or sawm (fasting). If worship were limited to these acts, it would be impractical for everyday living. How often do we perform salah? Certainly not 24-7.
Relying solely on acts of worship like salah and zakah to gain entry into Jannah (paradise) is not practical. Therefore, we must consider the transformative power of Ikhlas. This sincerity in intention allows believers to continuously engage in the remembrance of Allah throughout their day, prompting the angels to construct their paradise—complete with palaces and streams—in the Hereafter. The efficacy of Ikhlas lies in making Allah the central purpose and intention behind all actions, thereby magnifying the spiritual merit and potential reward derived from every aspect of life. This profound understanding encourages Muslims to infuse their daily routines with devotion, turning even the most ordinary activities into opportunities for eternal blessings and closeness to Allah.
Allah has given us the power of Ikhlas, connected to the niyah (intention). The niyah has many functions: confirming an act of worship, differentiating between two similar acts of worship, and converting mundane activities into ibadah (worship) by making Allah the purpose, not the result. No extra action is required, just a shift in your heart. By doing so, you are building your Jannah while living your life on Earth.
Indeed, Allah created us to worship Him, and He asks nothing from us in return. Allah continues the verse in Surah Adh-Dhariyat, stating:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الرَّزَّاقُ ذُو الْقُوَّةِ الْمَتِينُ
Indeed, it is Allah who is the Provider, the firm possessor of strength. [Adh-Dhariyat 51:58]and other verse in Surah Ta-ha reinforces this:
And enjoin prayer upon your family and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you. And the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness. [Taha 20:132]
By affirming that there is no one worthy of worship besides Allah and understanding the true nature of worship, we can motivate ourselves to build our Jannah through our daily lives. Let Allah SWT be the purpose behind everything you do. That is the power of Ikhlas.
