Istiqamah: The Pillar of Steadfastness in the Journey of Success

As we journey towards success, transforming every action into an act of worship (ibadah) and pursuing excellence in our efforts for Allah, what remains is Istiqamah, the third "I". Istiqamah, translated as steadfastness, is about living every day with Ikhlas (sincerity) and Ihsan (excellence). This daily commitment involves the continuous struggle to maintain sincerity and excellence in all aspects of life.

Istiqamah requires different levels of effort depending on the circumstances. Some days, achieving Ikhlas might require 90% of your effort, while other days it might only need 30%. For example, during Ramadan, maintaining Ikhlas and Ihsan might be easier as you engage in fasting, prayer, and charity, requiring perhaps 30% of your effort. In contrast, other times of the year, like Muharram, might demand 70% of your effort.

Istiqamah is the daily battle and the spice of life, requiring effort to remain steadfast on the path of righteousness. The reward for maintaining Istiqamah is proportional to the effort invested. Just as one might be willing to undertake a challenging task for a significant reward, the spiritual rewards for steadfastness are immense, warranting the continuous effort required.

Understanding Istiqamah through the Quran and Sunnah reveals its profound value. It is challenging because maintaining Ikhlas is a daily struggle, made harder by Shaytan's constant efforts to lead us astray. However, Allah has promised rewards that are worthy of this struggle and effort.

Reflecting on this, we can appreciate that steadfastness (Istiqamah) is worth the effort because of the immense reward it holds. Despite its difficulty, it is a daily struggle that brings us closer to Allah, ensuring that our actions, no matter how mundane, are performed with the consciousness of His presence and pleasure. This daily commitment to excellence and sincerity in all actions transforms every aspect of our lives into acts of worship, elevating our spiritual standing and securing our place in Jannah.

The Quran emphasises the importance of steadfastness:
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا رَبُّنَا اللَّهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَقَامُوا تَتَنَزَّلُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ أَلَّا تَخَافُوا وَلَا تَحْزَنُوا وَأَبْشِرُوا بِالْجَنَّةِ الَّتِي كُنْتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ
Indeed, those who have said, 'Our Lord is Allah' and then remained steadfast - the angels will descend upon them, [saying], 'Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised.' [Fussilat 41:30]

Breaking down this verse:
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا رَبُّنَا اللَّهُ
"Indeed, those who have said, 'Our Lord is Allah'"

This part highlights the initial declaration of faith, recognizing and declaring Allah as the sole creator and sustainer.

ثُمَّ اسْتَقَامُوا
"and then remained steadfast"
After declaring their belief, these individuals maintain their faith and consistently follow the path of righteousness, adhering firmly to their faith and principles despite challenges and temptations.

تَتَنَزَّلُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ أَلَّا تَخَافُوا وَلَا تَحْزَنُوا
"the angels will descend upon them, [saying], 'Do not fear and do not grieve'"

When facing death, many worry about their families and the unknown. However, Allah assures that the angels will comfort the believers, reminding them that they were never alone. Just as a friend calms your nerves on a journey, the angels will accompany believers, easing their transition to the Hereafter.

Moreover, the promise of a new world where desires are effortlessly fulfilled by Allah highlights His boundless generosity and mercy.

Reflecting further:

وَأَبْشِرُوا بِالْجَنَّةِ الَّتِي كُنْتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ

"receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised"

The rewards and comforts mentioned are just the welcoming. Like welcoming a tired traveler with refreshments before the main meal, the angels’ promises are just the beginning. The main reward, which Allah has prepared, is beyond our imagination.

In essence, Istiqamah is about steadfastly adhering to Ikhlas and Ihsan, transforming every action into an act of worship and striving for excellence in the pursuit of Allah's pleasure. This unwavering commitment ensures spiritual growth and the ultimate reward of Jannah.
