[Ibn Qayyim's: The Sickness and The Cure] #7 - The Inevitable: The Grave, Divine Justice, and the End of Self-Deception

Among the most sobering teachings in Islam are the narrations that lift the veil from what lies beyond death. These are not stories meant for curiosity, nor warnings intended to paralyse the believer. Rather, they serve as a divine reminder that interrupts heedlessness, breaks false confidence, and calls the human being back to preparation before it is too late.

When these realities are heard with reflection, they do not merely inform the mind. They confront the heart and demand a question: what has been prepared for what is coming?

In discussing such narrations, it is important to understand a principle in Islamic scholarship. Some reports used in books of admonition contain varying levels of authenticity, and scholars of hadith have sometimes differed regarding specific chains or wordings. However, this does not mean such narrations are discarded. The science of hadith distinguishes between levels of strength. Narrations that are not fully authentic may still be cited in matters of reminders, virtues, and warnings, as long as they are not used to establish legal rulings or acts of worship. More importantly, the meanings of these narrations are often supported by stronger evidences in the Quran and authentic Sunnah. Allah ﷻ says:

So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it. And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it. [al-Zalzalah 99:7-8]

Thus, when these narrations are presented, the intention is not blind acceptance without scholarship, but sincere reflection upon meanings already grounded in revelation.

Mercy Without Justice Is Not Hope

A central truth repeatedly emphasised in Islam is the balance between Allah’s mercy and His justice. Allah ﷻ is al-Rahman, the Most Merciful, whose mercy encompasses all things. Yet He is also al-Adl, the Absolutely Just.

Justice means that righteousness and corruption are not treated as the same. The Quran states:

Or do those who commit evil deeds think that We will make them like those who believe and do righteous deeds, equal in their life and their death? Evil is what they judge. [Al-Jathiyah 45:21]

To rely on Allah’s mercy while persisting in sin without repentance is not true hope. It becomes self-deception. Hope in Islam always calls for action, return, and sincerity.

The Reality of the Grave

One of the most detailed descriptions of the unseen is found in the narration of Al-Bara ibn Azib RA, in which the Prophet ﷺ described what occurs after burial.

When a believer is placed in the grave, he hears the footsteps of those who leave him. Two angels come, sit him upright, and ask:

"Who is your Lord?",  "What is your religion?", "Who is your Prophet?"

The believer answers correctly, not merely through memorisation, but through a life lived upon those truths.

Then a caller from the heavens declares his truthfulness. His grave is expanded, filled with light and fragrance from Paradise, and a door is opened for him to see his place in Jannah.

In contrast, the one who lived in rejection or persistent disobedience is unable to answer. Confusion replaces certainty. A caller declares his falsehood. His grave tightens until it becomes constricted, and a door to punishment is opened for him.

These descriptions are not meant to overwhelm the heart with despair, but to awaken urgency before the moment of return becomes final.

Time Is Quietly Ending

One of the most overlooked realities is how quickly time passes. People wait for milestones, postpone repentance, and assume there will always be “later.” Yet years pass unnoticed, and life quietly approaches its end.

The Prophet ﷺ reminded that every human being is moving toward the grave. Life is not measured by time filled, but by deeds sent forward.

Each person has been given pathways of good: prayer, charity, service, patience, knowledge, and kindness. Wisdom lies in recognising one’s strengths and guarding against sins that silently destroy deeds, especially sins of speech and heedlessness.

One of Shaytan’s greatest strategies is delay. He whispers that Allah is Forgiving, that change can wait, that repentance can come later. But Allah ﷻ exposes this illusion:

And Satan will say when the matter has been decided, ‘Indeed Allah promised you the promise of truth, and I promised you but I betrayed you. I had no authority over you except that I called you and you responded to me.’ [Ibrahim 14:22]

Truth is simple: guidance is always available, but delay is a choice.

The Day That Has No Second Chance

The Day of Resurrection is unlike any other day. It is described as lasting fifty thousand years, a day after which there is no return.

The angels and the Spirit ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years.[al-Ma’arij 70:4]

It is the final division between two eternal realities: Paradise or Hell. Allah ﷻ says:

And warn them of the Day of Regret. [Maryam 19:39]

The Prophet ﷺ described that the sun will be brought close, and people will be submerged in sweat according to their deeds. Some to their ankles, some to their waists, and some completely overwhelmed.

This is justice in its purest form: consequences aligned perfectly with choices.

Despite these warnings, Islam does not call people to despair. The Quran combines both hope and warning so that the heart remains alive and balanced.

The believer’s path rests on three foundations: love, hope, and fear. Love anchors the heart, while hope and fear guide it like wings. Without balance, the journey collapses.

The purpose is preparation: preparation for death, the grave, questioning, and standing before Allah ﷻ. The call is not to panic, but to awaken. Not to despair, but to return.

Allah ﷻ says:

And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you may succeed. [an-Nur 24:31]

May Allah grant sincerity before death, ease in the grave, and success on the Day of Return. Ameen..
