[Book Review: The Story of Yusuf by Sh Dr Sajid Umar] Stages of Personal Growth and Self-Development Reflected in Surah Yusuf

If you don't know yet, you should know by now that the story of Yusuf AS is the best of stories in the Qur’an. That is the words of the AlMighty:

نَحْنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ أَحْسَنَ ٱلْقَصَصِ بِمَآ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْكَ هَـٰذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ وَإِن كُنتَ مِن قَبْلِهِۦ لَمِنَ ٱلْغَـٰفِلِينَ ٣
We relate to you ˹O Prophet˺ the best of stories through Our revelation of this Quran, though before this you were totally unaware ˹of them˺ [Yusuf 12:3]

Hence, I would definitely looking forward to read the book by my beloved Sheikh, Sheikh Dr Sajid Umar, as he announced the released of his book, The Story of Yusuf (get your copy here: Publisher - Quillspire )

Alhamdulillah, though we read, know and familiar with the story as told in the Qur'an, the book help me in understanding the lessons and wisdoms that are in the story, from another perspective and views. I was elated and filled with satisfaction reading the book, for there's so many 'a-ha' moments that I've discovered through my journey completing the reading. Alhamdulillah.

It explores the trials, resilience, and wisdom of Prophet Yusuf, making it relevant for modern readers. It combines traditional Islamic knowledge with practical, transformative insights, making it a useful guide for anyone seeking to learn from the story of Yusuf AS in a way that influences both their spiritual and worldly life.

There's so many takeaways that we can learn from the story of Yusuf AS.
Among the countless lessons we can extract from the story of Yusuf AS, one that resonates with me is how personal growth is often a product of trials. Every difficulty Yusuf encountered molded him into a stronger, more resilient individual. This is a powerful reminder that hardship is not a setback but an opportunity for spiritual and personal development.

Personal growth is a journey that unfolds over several key stages, each representing a deeper level of self-awareness, learning, and transformation.
By examining the story of Yusuf AS) we can draw parallels to these stages:

1. Self-Awareness

The first step in personal growth is developing a deeper awareness of ourself — our emotions, habits, strengths, weaknesses, and values. This stage is about recognizing who we are and understanding the areas that need improvement. Self-awareness also involves acknowledging your triggers and limitations, which can help us to make better decisions and grow emotionally.

In Surah Yusuf, this is being reflected in verse 4 where Yusuf AS shows early signs of self-awareness when he has a prophetic dream about his future greatness, where he sees eleven stars, the sun, and the moon prostrating to him. This dream serves as a revelation of his destiny and potential.

When Yusuf said to his father, 'O my father, indeed I have seen [in a dream] eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me.'" [Yusuf 12:4]

2. Self-Acceptance and Responsibility

Having self-awareness aid a person to gain ability to accept yourself fully, including your flaws and limitations. This level involves taking responsibility for our actions, behavior, and choices without blaming external circumstances. It also includes learning to forgive ourself for past mistakes and understanding that imperfection is part of being human.

After being betrayed by his brothers and thrown into a well, Yusuf is forced to accept his new reality. Instead of succumbing to despair, he takes responsibility for his circumstances and remains hopeful. This reflects his acceptance of the betrayal and responsibility for his emotional response.

3. Learning and Adaptation

Moving forward, upon being aware and accepting oneself, the next phase in personal growth  involves actively seeking to learn from experiences—both good and bad. We adapt to new situations, embrace challenges, and develop new skills. Whether through reading, reflection, or feedback, this phase is about absorbing knowledge and applying it in a way that enhances your growth.

Yusuf AS interprets the dreams of his fellow prisoners, showcasing his ability to learn and grow from his experiences. We acknowledge that the skill he acquired is inspired by Allah's will and wisdom, yet, it doesn't come in overnight.
While imprisoned, Yusuf AS learns to interpret dreams, which becomes crucial to his later success. He adapts to his circumstances and uses his time in prison for personal development.

4. Emotional Intelligence and Control

At this level, we  start to understand and regulate our emotions better. Emotional intelligence means recognizing not only your own feelings but also the emotions of others, allowing us to navigate social and personal interactions more effectively. This leads to better communication, empathy, and conflict resolution.

When faced with temptation from the wife of the Aziz, Yusuf displays emotional intelligence by recognizing the potential consequences of giving in to temptation and choosing to resist, understanding the implications for his character and faith. Yusuf AS awareness of emotions, both his own and the wife of al-Aziz, allowing him to act with integrity.

And she certainly determined to seduce him, and he would have inclined to her had he not seen the proof of his Lord. This is how We kept evil and indecency away from him, for he was truly one of Our chosen servants. [Yusuf 12:24]

5. Overcoming Limiting Beliefs

Personal growth often involves identifying and breaking through limiting beliefs—negative patterns of thought that hold you back. This stage requires us to challenge and reshape these beliefs, allowing you to overcome self-doubt, fear of failure, or a lack of confidence. It’s about cultivating a growth mindset that sees challenges as opportunities rather than obstacles.

Yusuf’s imprisonment could have led him to develop limiting beliefs about his worth and future. Even in prison, Yusuf holds onto his faith, showing resilience and an unwavering belief in his potential. He maintains a belief in Allah’s plan, refusing to let his circumstances define him when  his cellmate was released and did not mentioned Yusuf's name to his master as requested and so he remained in prison for several years.

6. Purpose and Vision

As we progress, personal growth begins to focus on defining our purpose and long-term vision. At this stage, we seek and ask deeper questions about our life's meaning and direction. We align our goals, actions, and values with a clear purpose, which drives us toward fulfillment and achievement.

Yusuf’s role in interpreting the King's dream showcases his clear vision and purpose. He not only provides insight but also suggests a plan for the impending famine, demonstrating foresight and strategic thinking. His ability to foresee and plan for the future reflects a strong sense of purpose.

7. Contribution and Legacy

The ultimate level of personal growth (before we leave the world) involves contributing to others and leaving a positive impact on the world. At this stage, personal fulfillment comes from helping others grow, sharing knowledge, and giving back to the community. It’s about focusing on something bigger than ourself and making a lasting contribution that reflects our values and purpose.

After rising to power, Yusuf uses his position to help others during the famine, providing for the people of Egypt and reuniting with his family. His legacy is one of compassion, leadership, and forgiveness.

Then he raised his parents to the throne, and they all fell down in prostration to Joseph, who then said, “O my dear father! This is the interpretation of my old dream. My Lord has made it come true. He was truly kind to me when He freed me from prison, and brought you all from the desert after Satan had ignited rivalry between me and my siblings. Indeed my Lord is subtle in fulfilling what He wills. Surely He ˹alone˺ is the All-Knowing, All-Wise.” [Yusuf 12:100]

This moment highlights his contributions to his family and community, demonstrating how he became a leader focused on healing rather than revenge.

The stages of self-growth and self-development are not linear; it is often cyclical, with individuals revisiting and refining different aspects of each stage over time; to continuously evolve, contribute to the betterment of others, and leave behind a meaningful legacy. Each stage holds the potential for transformation. Whether through psychological exploration or spiritual practice, the ultimate goal is to continuously evolve, improve, and contribute to a meaningful life.

By reflecting on these stages through the lens of Surah Yusuf, we can better understand our own journeys toward spiritual and personal growth, using Yusuf’s AS life as a model of resilience, wisdom, and unwavering faith.
