Proving God's Existence through Design Arguments
Not everyone believes in God. Across the globe, beliefs about the existence of a higher power vary widely. Some people are firm believers, others are sceptics, and some remain undecided. In the realm of faith, the concept of God is often approached through various arguments, one of the simplest being the Design Argument.
The Design Argument posits that the existence and intricate nature of the universe point towards the presence of a deliberate Designer. By contemplating the complexity and order of natural phenomena, one can infer the existence of a purposeful creator. This argument is built on the observation of the universe’s intricate design and harmonious functioning.
When we consider the numerous creations in the universe, from the smallest cells to the vast galaxies, we notice a remarkable level of complexity and order. The processes that sustain life, the routines followed by celestial bodies, and the detailed design of living organisms all hint at an intelligent designer. This intricate design is difficult to attribute to mere coincidence or randomness.
The Role of Knowledge
Understanding the overall picture of the universe's design requires knowledge. Scientific discoveries and advancements have allowed us to appreciate the detailed workings of natural phenomena, reinforcing the idea of a designed universe. However, even without deep scientific knowledge, the sheer complexity and harmony in nature can lead one to infer the existence of a creator.
The Fallacy of Randomness
Randomness can be understood as the occurrence of events without any predictable pattern or discernible cause. Take an example in the context of the universe, randomness suggests that events happen without any reason or intention behind them. However, the observable universe contradicts this notion, as it exhibits consistent laws and structures.
Can anyone truly prove that randomness exists in the creation of the universe? The precision with which natural laws operate and the consistency of cosmic events suggest a designed order rather than chaotic randomness.
The idea that the universe’s complexity could arise from random events is often viewed as illogical. Randomness, in the purest sense, implies the absence of order or predictability. Yet, everywhere we look, we find systems governed by precise laws and patterns.
Muslims believe that the universe is a testament to God's creation, exhibiting uniformity, regularity and stability. The Quran frequently invites believers to reflect on the natural world as evidence of God's existence and power.
Allah SWT says in the Quran
"We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. But is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?" [Fussilat 41:53]
This verse encourages believers to observe the world around them as proof of divine creation. Scholars emphasise the importance of reflecting on the signs of Allah in both the external world and within oneself as a pathway to recognizing and submitting to His truth. This verse invites believers to deepen their faith through contemplation of the divine signs and to acknowledge Allah’s all-encompassing presence and knowledge.

However, the non-believers may view the universe differently. Some may see it as a product of natural processes devoid of any intentional design. Theories such as evolution and Darwinism explain the diversity of life through natural selection and random mutations. However, these theories do not necessarily address the uniformity and stability of the universe as a whole.
The Higher Power
Who else but a higher power could have created such wondrous creations? The complexity and order observed in the universe often lead to the conclusion that it must be the work of an intelligent designer. This aligns with the belief in a higher power, as posited by Islam. By reflecting on the complexity, order, and uniformity of the universe, one can infer the presence of a purposeful creator. In Islamic theology, Allah SWT is referred to as "Al-Khaliq" (The Creator) and "Al-Musawwir" (The Fashioner), emphasising His role in creating and shaping all things according to His wisdom and purpose. The concept of "The Purposeful Creator" underscores the belief that the universe and life within it are not random occurrences but are part of a grand design by a wise and intentional Creator. This belief provides a framework for understanding the existence of order, complexity, and meaning in the world, as well as the moral and spiritual guidance provided through divine revelation.
The Logic of Oneness
In Islamic theology, the concept of Tawhid, or the Oneness of God, is fundamental. Tawhid asserts that there is only one God, Allah SWT, who is unique, indivisible, and without equal. The idea of having more than one god is not only rejected but is also considered illogical and inherently flawed. This belief is reinforced through various verses in the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad SAW.
The notion that there could be more than one god leads to the inevitable problem of a clash of power. If multiple gods existed, each with supreme authority, they would inevitably conflict with one another. Such conflicts would result in chaos, as each god would attempt to assert dominance over the others. This scenario is incompatible with the observed order and harmony in the universe.
If the hypothetical multiple gods were to compromise and bargain with each other, it would indicate a form of weakness. The need for compromise suggests that each god lacks complete power and authority, which contradicts the very definition of a god in Islamic theology. A true god, in the Islamic understanding, is all-powerful and does not need to negotiate or share authority.

The Quran provides clear and direct evidence to support the concept of Tawhid and refute the idea of polytheism. Here are key verses that emphasise the Oneness of God:
In the Quran, Allah explicitly states that there is only one God, emphasizing His unique nature and supreme mercy.
And your god is one God. There is no deity [worthy of worship] except Him, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. [Al-Baqarah 2:163]
In Surah Al-Mu’minun verse 91, Allah states that if there were multiple gods, each would have asserted control over their creations, leading to conflict and disorder.
"Allah has not taken any son, nor has there ever been with Him any deity. [If there had been], then each deity would have taken what it created, and some of them would have sought to overcome others. Exalted is Allah above what they describe [concerning Him]." [Al-Mu’minun 23:91]
The Qur'an challenges the idea of other gods existing alongside Allah and suggests that if other gods existed, they would have tried to find a way to assert their authority, which is an absurdity given Allah's absolute sovereignty.
"Say, 'If there had been other gods with Him, as they say, then they would have sought a way to the Owner of the Throne.'" [Al-Isra’ 17:42]
The concept of Tawhid, or the Oneness of God, is central to Islamic belief and theology. The logical implications of having more than one god lead to contradictions and the breakdown of the universe's order and harmony. The Quran reinforces this understanding by explicitly stating the uniqueness and singularity of Allah, rejecting any form of polytheism. Through clear and direct verses, the Quran provides a comprehensive argument for the Oneness of God, establishing that there could only be one supreme, all-powerful deity who governs the entire universe without any rival or equal.
Revelations and Prophets: Evidence of Truthfulness in Islam
Divine Revelation: Evidence of Truthfulness
The truthfulness of a revelation in Islam is assessed through necessary and sufficient conditions. The Quran meets both criteria, providing a robust foundation for Islamic faith. It fulfils both necessary and sufficient conditions for being a true revelation.
The Qur’an is free from contradictions, presenting a coherent and unified message throughout its entirety. As stated in the Qur’an,
Then do they not reflect upon the Quran? If it had been from [any] other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction. [An-Nisa 4:82].
Moreover, the Qur’an has been meticulously preserved over centuries, safeguarded from any alterations or corruptions. Allah assures this preservation, saying,
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Quran and indeed, We will be its guardian.
[al-Hijr 15:9]
Furthermore, the Qur’an also meets sufficient conditions that validate its credibility. It contains prophecies that have been fulfilled with precision, such as the prediction of the Romans' victory over the Persians within a specified time frame:
الرُّومُ غُلِبَتِ الْأَرْضِ وَهُم مِّن بَعْدِ غَلَبِهِمْ سَيَغْلِبُونَ فِي بِضْعِ سِنِينَ ۗ لِلَّهِ الْأَمْرُ مِن قَبْلُ وَمِن بَعْدُ
The Romans have been defeated in the nearest land. But they, after their defeat, will overcome within three to nine years. [ar-Ruum 30:2-4]
The Quran's accurate descriptions of natural phenomena and historical events align with modern scientific knowledge, affirming its accuracy and precision.
Therefore, the Quran stands as a testament to its divine origin by fulfilling both the essential criteria of consistency and preservation, as well as the substantial criteria of prophecy fulfilment and precision in its descriptions. These attributes collectively affirm the Quran's status as a revelation from Allah, containing guidance and truth for all of humanity.
