Preservation of the Quran during Uthman Al-Affan (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) Era

Narrated Anas bin Malik: Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman came to Uthman at the time when the people of Sham (Syria) and the people of Iraq were waging war to conquer Armenia and Azerbaijan. Hudhaifa was afraid of their differences in the recitation of the Quran, so he said to Uthman, 'O chief of the Believers! Save this nation before they differ about the Book (Quran) as Jews and Christians did before'. So Uthman sent a message to Hafsa saying, 'Send us the manuscripts of the Quran so that we may compile the Quranic materials in perfect copies and return the manuscripts to you'. Hafsa sent it to Uthman. 'Uthman then ordered Zaid bin Thabit, 'Abdullah bin Az-Zubair, Said bin Al-As and Abdur Rahman bin Harith bin Hisham to rewrite the manuscripts in perfect copies. Uthman said to the three Quraishi men, 'In case you disagree with Zaid bin Thabit on any point in the Quran, then write it in dialects of Quraish as the Quran must be read in the Quraishi tongue'. They di...

Preservation of the Quran during Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) Era

The Quran continued to be preserved in the hearts of the Sahabah who had memorised it, and on the skins and other materials until the time of the caliph Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ).   In the 12th year after Hijrah, 70 of huffaz were killed in the Battle of Yamamah. Umar (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) pitched the idea of the Quran to be collected in a written form, gathering of pages (suhuf) and kept it safe. Abu Bakr (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) was overwhelmed at first, for he didn’t want to do something that was not done by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. However, Allah ﷻ opened his heart and accepted the idea. He approached Zayd ibn Thabit (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) to lead the gathering and compilation Zayd ibn Thabit (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) was overwhelmed with the requested task and said that he would rather move mountains than doing something that was not done during the Prophet ﷺ  era. It could be a form of bid'ah. However, Umar convinced him as the intention was for th...

Preservation of the Quran during the Prophet ﷺ Era

Preservation of The Quran Everything about the Quran including its recitation, the meaning and reasons of revelations are being preserved  in the hearts of the believers before the Mushaf. There are three stages of the Quran preservation which are: During the Prophet  ﷺ  During Abu Bakr As-Siddiq (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ)  During Uthman Al-Affan (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ)  Preservation during the Prophet ﷺ Era In the Quran surah al-’Araf verse 158, Allah ﷻ said: قُلۡ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ إِنِّي رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَيۡكُمۡ جَمِيعًا ٱلَّذِي لَهُۥ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ يُحۡيِۦ وَيُمِيتُ فَـَٔامِنُواْ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ٱلنَّبِيِّ ٱلۡأُمِّيِّ ٱلَّذِي يُؤۡمِنُ بِٱللَّهِ وَكَلِمَٰتِهِۦ وَٱتَّبِعُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تَهۡتَدُونَ Say [O Prophet], “O people, I am the Messenger of Allah to you all. To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and earth; none has the right to be worshipped except Him; He gives life and causes death.” So belie...

Recitation of Al-Quran & Types of Verses in The Quran

Recitation of the Quran The ahruf of the Quran is not the same as the qira’at. What is the difference between qira'at vs ahruf? Ahruf is revealed by Allah ﷻ while the qira'at is the manifestation from the taqari (reciters) chosen from the ahruf and taught to the students and so on. The ahruf as a means of how the Quran recited, so that people read the Quran as it was received. The ahruf has seven (7) modes, while the qira'at has ten (10).  However, before there were ten, they could have been 100 and more. As an analogy, the qira’at is how different people pronounce certain words and verses according to their accents and slangs. For example, the way one would pronounce the statement "I want water" , could varies accordingly such as "I want wat-er", "I need wat-er", "I wanna wadder" and many other styles and forms.  The ten qira'at being used until today has preserved the seven original ahruf. Qira’at can’t simply be created as th...

Revelation of Al-Quran

The Quran we are seeing today is not arranged as it was revealed. It was arranged based on the instruction of Prophet ﷺ. The chapters are not as per the order it was revealed. There are two opinions on the arrangement of the chapters, which are : Upon the consensus of the sahabah Upon instruction of the Prophet ﷺ, according to the guidance from Allah ﷻ . This is stronger opinion, due to the following hujjah: By looking at the ending of a chapter and the beginning of the other chapter, the synergy of the chapters is a phenomenon.  It is تناسب tanaasub which means there are connectivity between the surah e.g. Al-Fatiha ending about Allah's anger towards the Jews  ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ , and Al-Baqarah that follow suit provides the tafseer of  ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ while Ali Emran explains the tafseer of ٱلضَّآلِّين. Al-Quran was revealed in two stages: In one go from Bayt al-Ma'moor to the first Heaven From the first Heaven to the earth over a period of 23 years, in piecemeal Allah ﷻ says in...

Adab in Seeking Knowledge in Islam

Adaab in Seeking Knowledge In searching for knowledge, one should have correct attitudes and manners towards it.  Knowledge cannot be attained without the right adaab (i.e. manners).  Reflecting upon Ibn Qayyim’ (رحمه الله) words of wisdoms, adaab is how a person represent oneself: “Adaab is manifesting a beautiful character through extracting it from your nature, the most complete of your abilities in actions, speeches, attitudes & demeanour. Knowledge of manners entails the knowledge of correcting the articulation of the tongue and protecting it from mistakes and malfunctions” -Ibn Qayyim- Students of knowledge should have the right sincere intention which would be the result from a purified heart and self. Narrated Al-Nu’man ibn Bashir ( رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ ) reported, the Messenger of Allah ( ﷺ ) said,  “Verily, in the body is a piece of flesh which, if sound, the entire body is sound, and if corrupt, the entire body is corrupt. Truly, it is the heart.” [Bukha...
